Did some work behind the scenes of the game blog page so that the game filters now work much better.
A couple of months back I found loads of old notes about all the old Epic Space Marine games we played, starting from back when I was in high school. I thought it would be a good idea to type them all up as best I could, and upload them all. While I was at it, I also converted the Epic-S and 40K battle reports from their PDF state to HTML, and they can be found on the Warhammer 40K page.

Got a few things done these last couple of weeks, but have only ended up giving myself more tasks to do.
Up first, I've finally painted the old style Tyranid Warriors. They took way too long, so for the next unit I'm painting, the Termagants, I'm going to keep it as simple as possible, like I did for the Genestealers a few years back.
After many failed attempts, I finally settled for less than perfect for my Dark Eldar Wyches. Most of the casts I tried had imperfections, from small to very obvious. In the end, I've used the best 4 bodies, and will just try and fill the few little cracks and problem areas with either PVA or paint.
Finishing the Wyches was not the main problem I've had, as that honour belongs to the failcast Striking Scorpions that I got around to assembling recently. Holy shit. That material is so bad. GW started using that stuff years ago, meaning they've had a long time now to get it right, but it was a horrible experience getting those models table ready. Without doubt, I will never buy any such models ever again.
There was so much flashing to remove, and in really awkward places. There's also a fair few little bubbles, and 4 of the 5 swords needed heating and bending back into correct position. Shoddy.
It means that, at last, all my newly aquired models are now assembled, to go with all my already-owned models from last time. All I really need to do is magnetize the gun ends for the Hive Guard, and strip the Warriors I got from ebay (more Warriors, sigh).
Quite a while ago I decided that I would not bother getting any more wargaming terrain, but our forays into 40K late last year started changing my mind. A couple of months back, I came up with an idea to make a new river after my old crappy one went in the bin a couple of years back. I eventually decided against that as there are no rules for rivers in 40K any more. It seems more important to have LOS-blocking terrain, and I recently saw some MDF stuff for a fairly good price so I've chosen to try it. I've no idea what it's like to put together, but I think I'm going to paint it to look like rockcrete rather than metal.
Outside of wargaming, I've made a little progress on some other things. My original plan for the Gaslands templates was to laminate them, but to save time I first tried just gluing them to some card. I must have put on way too much glue or something, and this ended up with the templates creasing up really bad. So after all that, I had to print them out again and laminate them anyway.
Now I just need to figure out how to put some guns on the vehicles so we can give it a bash.
Over Christmas we finally tried Deep Pockets, and while the game went alright, I was unhappy with a few things. For some weird reason, my printer originally printed the dark blue and purple cards so they looked very similar, so I've made a new purple set. I've also printed and laminated a new set of money cards, as the others were crappy, and I wanted to steal the card sleeves for Marvel Legendary. So all is good now.
I can't believe it's taken us 29 months to play 15 games of Blood Bowl, but finally our latest league is finished. Phew. To begin with it was a really hard league for me, but it started to turn around near the end, and I won 3 of my last 4 games, including leading the dwarf team The Grog Guzzlers to the title in the deciding, last match of the league. I'd have preferred to have done better with the Crocoviles, who were my dedicated team in that competition, but I guess third isn't bad after how I started.

As far as Blood Bowl games going forward, there really doesn't seem to be much desire to play it in my little group right now, so it's unlikely there'll be more games any time soon. Though that might give me the chance to try something I've wanted to do for a while, which is something I'm calling the Blood Bowl ERL, or Experimental Rules League. In this, I just want to try different house rules to see if I can speed up the game and balance the teams a bit better. I'd also like the game to not punish bad dice rolls so much, but instead punish bad play. Because lets face it, if Nuffle is not on your side, there's nothing you can do in that game no matter how good you play, and that's just stupid.
I've already got a whole page of ideas that I want to try, if I can ever get around to it.
Moving on, for the past couple of weeks I've put in quite a bit of work on my Super Dungeon rules, after I finally found a copy of 1st edition on ebay and got really motivated again. I'm now on the 5th version of my rules, and most of the changes for this one are in an effort to make the game even faster. The main change is that I've thrown out buffs and debuffs, so their counters are no longer needed, and there are less things to remember. The changes have definitely made it faster and easier, and I feel at last like I'm on the right track.
Of course, if I get these working I'll have to make a full, advanced rule set which adds all these things back in, for when we want to punish ourselves with a much longer game.
In regards to the 1st edition version of the game, I'm actually quite disappointed in a lot of the models. The sculpts are just not as good as those from the Forgotten King set. I don't know how clear it is in the picture here, but the 1st edition model (left) does not have the clear details of the F.K. model, and is also covered in more mold lines.
Still, I really like the boards, even though they're not the same size, as there's just less junk on them to have to move and fight around.
For my playtesting, I've put together some simple wooden counters, in grey and green, for use as terrain. The game doesn't really need them, but sometimes it's easy to miss symbols on the board (especially on games nights when drink is involved) and these just make it easier to see things the heroes are supposed to move around.
A few years back we were really into playing Blood Bowl, enough so that I even made my own board to play on called The Stompin' Ground. All these years have passed and that board has never even been used, as I was always really unhappy with it.
After three years away from the game, new interest has been forming, and preparations are now complete for the continuation of season 6. So that we do not have to use my old original Blood Bowl board, I have finally gone back to the Stompin' Ground to make it usable at last.
Firstly, I had to do something about the crappy and almost sandpaper-esque grass mat that I had used previously. Slapping a nice thick coat of static grass over the top of it has taken away its roughness. I'm not so scared about using painted minis on it any more.
After that, the grid needed re-painting, as it was really hard to see. I think I found the exact locations of most of the crosses, but I guessed for some of the more hidden ones, and they are probably slightly out of place. But never mind. It's still a lot better than it was.
I also had to remake the scoreboard areas, as a lot of the paint and glue had peeled off, making it look very untidy. I've contructed the new ones in a different way to minimize that problem in the future.
It's not that great, but I'm happy to use it at last. Hopefully, the little 6-team league we've arranged will begin soon, and some stompin' will finally happen on the Stompin' Ground.

Wow, kind of a crazy entry for this blog after some years of inactivity. It seems finally that some motivation and desire to work on this hobby is again starting to flow through my veins.
The first thing I got around to was more terrain. After finishing the oil plant I felt determined to finish all the other terrain I had started in the past. In addition, I made some steps up in the style of the hilly rock things, and some bridges to also get an interesting two-level effect.

I've also spent many hours going through all my old and never used models that have been collecting dust in the loft, preparing them all for a spraying marathon. It's been very strange tidying up my old Space Crusade stuff, which me and my friends utterly destroyed with our crappy painting efforts back in the early 90s. I've also finally glued together my Orks and Gretchin which I've owned since the 2nd edition box set, so my warboss has got some Boyz to hang around with.
With all my terrain done and (hopefully) soon all my spraying done, all I'll have left is many hundreds of models to paint. I highly doubt I'll be as motivated to get stuck into all those though...

I also lucked out recently when I had some models given to me, including some 6mm scale stuff and an original Varag Ghoul-Chewer and Horkon Heartripper. I used to have Varag back when I started playing Blood Bowl in 94, but for some reason I cut his hands off and glued them to a Black Orc to make my own version of the model in an attempt to make him more imposing. More recently I was actually planning on using a Black Scorpion model and an elf I got free with White Dwarf as these characters, but obviously these two new additions will take their rightful places on the pitch.

And now to quite an interesing little update concerning actual gameplay. Last year sometime me and Scoob started bashing out some ideas for our own ruleset based on 5th edition 40K. This was mainly because nobody wanted to play either 6th or the WARGAME rules I was originally making, and 5th had gotten a bit stale. So we've done a fair bit of playtesting and even more sitting down and discussing rule ideas over the last 6 months or so, and we're nearly at a point where the rules are sorted. We're not quite sure how we're going to decide on points values, but in order to playtest the rules a bit more, and get an idea of points, we're hoping to do a small narrative campaign sometime soon. Should be interesting.
