14th May 2013: Tryin' Out Dem Champs

Still playing a lot of LoL with Scoob and JIK, just going nuts as usual.

In order to try and increase our skills a bit, me and Scoob have been doing a fair few 2v5 matches against the bots, chopping and changin' the bot team to try and create the hardest team for us to go against. Without doubt Malphite and Cho'Gath are always there, then the other three spots are taken by either Fiddles, Lux, Master Yi, Nunu or Tristana. These seem to be the hardest bots. Even then, we've been able to win the majority of the 2v5 matches. One we lost recently was an ace game, made so close because we decided we could only play as close combat champs, making the laning phase much harder. Scoob went with one of his new champs, Darius, while I went Nunu.

Been lining up a few other games. I've got quite a few RTS games where I only ever played LAN games and never bothered with the campaign. Lord Of The Rings: Battle For Middle Earth is one such game. In fact, never even played the multiplayer really as I didn't like the game back when I bought it. But have just installed it and will hopefully get into it soon. Have also reinstalled Star Trek Online to see what's changed, if anything, and am hoping some fellow Captains will be up for more space adventures. For a long while now I've been waiting for some other games I played as a wee young whipper snapper to come up for sale on GOG, and just managed to get the weird as hell 7th Guest. Got very close to the end of that back in the late 90s, and will be keen to get it done once and for all.

24th April 2013: Poking Games With Sticks

For the past few weeks I've been trying to raise some interest in other games that we maybe played years ago, or that I own and have never really played. But mostly we've been back playing that damn addictive League Of Legends. I think rather than take it any kind of seriously, we've just been farting around trying all the free champs and trying different things with ones we already own. We're not a bunch of nutters that learn all the champs and items to max their chances of winning like most people who play the game. There's not enough time in my life for that.
Speaking of champs we own, I've unlocked Nidalee and Blitzcrank, JIK's unlocked Miss Fortune and Fiddlesticks, and Scoob has been tempted away from the lovely Ashe and is now using Draven and Vayne a lot. Though we don't play proper PVP games, we have had a couple of PVP games just amongst ourselves, where Scoob and his ass kicking Draven always clear up.

But I have managed to install some of my older games, always a fun task on Windows 7, and we recently gave Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds a run out. We used to play the hell out of that game once upon a time, but we really did struggle to get back into it. Yes, we couldn't remember what the hell was going on, but it was just so very slow compared to RTS style games we've played in more recent years. Also, we put it on easy thinking we would need it due to our lack of practise, but we stomped all over the enemy. I'll be quite surprised if we play it again, but hopefully I'll keep some interest in it as I never did the campaign, and could do with going through it.

10th April 2013: The Great Crusade

Been having some pretty cool games of Dark Crusade recently. First, had a single player skirmish where my Eldar allies ran riot over the enemy, and I decided from then on to give the pointy ears a try. Scoob joined me for a 4v4, and we both went with newish armies, with me being Eldar and him running Chaos. In a monster of a battle that took quite some time, we eventually pushed through to take the win against the Necron and Guard enemies.

Then JIK joined us for a couple of beastly 4v4 games with us going against full Necron enemies. I ran Eldar again, with JIK Chaos and a Marine CPU ally. For the first game Scoob took Guard. We were under pressure right from the start as 4 Necron Lords tanked the hell out of our few troops, allowing their Warriors to attack unmolested. My base was at the front of our diamond and it soon fell. I started to build another at the rear of our formation but before it was up and running we were overwhelmed. In the second game Scoob switched to Marines. It went pretty much the same as the first game for a while, with my base falling. This time I managed to get the second base up and running, as Scoob with his favoured army and JIK getting back up to speed managed to hold out. I built up a big army and threw them in. It seems that masses of Dark Reapers, Wraithlords and the Avatar can turn a fairly balanced fight quite quickly, and most of their attackers were killed. However, with 4 armies worth of Tomb Spiders and Necron Lords constantly resurrecting in our bases, our defence had to be constant. It took just one lull in the fighting, and I charged my surviving Wraithlords and Dark Reapers at the enemy base, managing to take out one of their Monoliths. From then on we completely steam rolled them. But it was a long, awesome game.

19th March 2013: Trying To Grease The Wheels

Wow. Just 4 wargaming blog updates all last year, and this first 2013 entry nearly 4 months in. I really suck at keeping up with all this stuff.

Anyway, I've been pushing a bit recently trying to get everyone back into the idea of wargames, and there's a little bit of interest again. We're not really liking the idea of 40K though. I doubt that it will ever become a popular game with us again. Where there is definite interest is in Blood Bowl. We've decided to definitely scrap the League Of Doom we were doing before, and instead just play random games with random teams whenever we feel like it, but keep the teams from the league and continue their development. Hopefully it won't just be me and the Scoob, as several others have expressed interest in learning the rules. So fingers crossed.

With this looking like it's gonna happen, I went hunting for that 8th and final team I'd always wanted. Back in the 90s, I sold my Skaven, Dwarf and Dark Elf teams to friends, and have always regretted it. I cobbled together Dwarf and Skaven teams over a year ago, so it made sense to go after Dark Elves, as I'd always wanted them back. However, as much as I like the GW Dark Elf models, I just was not gonna pay over £40 for a team and still need to go looking for assassins and star players. And then I came up against another stumbling block when I found out that Impact! minis had released their lizard team in plastic resin taking its price from £60ish down to £20ish. And this for a full team with big guy. Why GW's Failcast went up in price when many other company's restic prices come way down I've no idea.

So, with no real good Dark Elves out there I was gonna just go with the Lizards as the 8th. Then I had another plan. If I got the female Dark Elf team from Shadowforge I could sometimes use them as Dark Elves and sometimes use them as Amazons. As I couldn't choose between these two ideas, I went for both, and put in orders for my first wargaming minis in a very long time.

So just recently a whole host of minis, some new and some rescued from the loft, have been added to my Blood Bowl collection. These include the Shadowforge Wicked Elves, the Sarcos team by Impact & Roll Jordan, and a Reaper Bones minotaur to give my Chaos their big guy at last.

I may have saved some money, but these teams are definitely gonna give me more work to do. The Wicked Elves have quite few mold lines where the 2 halves were not lined up right. Got a few problems with my first ever resin purchase as well, with holes and such, but I guess that's what you get for buying a crappy resin £23 team which in metal costs around £60. Not that it should be an excuse mind.

On another brighter note, finally getting around to working on the WARGAME rules I started months ago. There'll hopefully be a tabletop wargame and hex-based board game. The original plan to also do a 6mm ruleset has been shelved for the moment, as I've already done that with the old Epic-S rules which seem perfectly playable, if not 100% finished.

What's cool about the WARGAME idea is that I could take all the fantasy football big guys from the above pic (well, except the Deathroller) and make a unit of monsters out of them that I could use to beat the crap out of an opponent. I'm aiming for it to be quite flexible so you can make units out of lots of different 28mm models. I could always use the Deathroller as a biker model...
