Setting Up

Picking Armies

Armies in Epic-S are picked in detachments. So first, players must agree on how many detachments their armies are going to consist of, and how many points can be allocated to each detachment. A good starting point is for each army to consist of 3 detachments, each of 2000pts. This will make the game a 6000pt game.

Unless all players agree, at least half of the total points spent on an army must be spent on normal units, leaving up to half of the total points for special units.

Setting Up The Battlefield

One player sets up the board and terrain and the other player chooses which side they want to deploy on, or both players set up the terrain and the players roll off to see who chooses their deployment zone.

Remember to try and make the terrain interesting and fair, so that the game will be as close and as fun as possible.

Setting Up Objectives

Objectives are an optional part of the game, giving players areas of the battlefield to fight over in order to score extra points.

If one player set up the battlefield, then they should also place the objective counters. If both players set up the battlefield, then they should either discuss where the objectives should be placed, or take it in turns placing them. This should be done before rolling off to see who chooses their deployment zone.

There are no strict rules on the number of objective counters that should be used. But in general, the more points in the game, and the bigger the board, then the more counters should be placed. This of course will depend on the terrain layout.
A good rule of thumb for a standard 6000pt battle on a 6x4 board is to use 6 objectives.

Objective counters should not be placed in terrain that is impassable to infantry, and unless both players agree, they should not be placed within 20cm of each other, or within 5cm of the table edge.

Setting Up The Armies

Deployment zones

Deployment zones

Armies are set up 30cm away from the battlefield mid point, and therefore 60cm away from each other. Players roll off, with the winner choosing who will deploy a unit first. Players then alternate placing units until all units are deployed.

Models within a unit must remain within 5cm coherency.

The Turn

Turn Structure

There are four phases that make up a turn of Epic-S, and during a turn both players will get to activate and use all of their units.

  1. Initiative Phase
  2. Psychic Phase
  3. Activation Phase
  4. Reinforcement Phase

Initiative Phase

At the start of each turn, players roll off to see who has the initiative. On the first turn, whoever finished setting up their models first gets +1 to this roll. On all other turns, the player who did not have the initiative last turn gets +1 to their roll. Re-roll ties.

Psychic Phase

Players alternate using their psykers. The player with the initiative decides who will go first.

Each psyker can perform one of the special psychic powers from their army's available powers.

Psykers do not use psychic shooting attacks during this phase - they will instead use those when they normally get to shoot.

Psychic powers used in this phase can always be used even if the unit is engaged in combat.

Unless stated in the power's description, powers that can target friendly units can be used on the psyker itself.

Activation Phase

In this phase, players will alternate activating a detachment each, which will allow them to use all of the units within that detachment. Play will then pass to the other player, who will activate one of their detachments, and so on, until all of the detachments have been used.

The player with the initiative decides who will activate one of their detachments first.

Reinforcement Phase

In this phase, players are given the chance to bring units that are not on the board yet into play. This will mostly be to bring in units that can deep strike, though other methods of using reserves may be decided upon by the players themselves.

If both players wish to bring in reserves this turn, then they should roll off, with the winner deciding who will place a unit first. Having the initiative has no effect during this phase.

Activating Detachments & Orders

When a detachment is activated, each unit within the detachment can be issued orders and used. Each order will allow a unit to perform one or more actions. An action must be completed before moving on to the next, but unlike in most wargames, a unit does not have to perform all of its allowed actions before the next unit can be used.

For example, a player could choose advance orders for a unit, and perform that unit's shoot action. Then they could choose charge orders for another unit, and perform both the move and fight actions one after the other. Then, if they wished, they could go back to the first unit to take their move action.

The orders available are the same orders as in the old Epic, but with 2 extras:

Advance

This order allows a unit to make two actions: move and shoot. When they make the move action they can move up to their normal movement allowance, and may engage enemy units. If they engage an enemy unit, they may then make a fight action.

If they engage the enemy before making the shoot action, they may only make the shoot action if they are not fire locked.

This order may not be used if any model in the unit is pinned.

Charge

This order allows a unit to make two actions: move and fight. The move action can not be made after making the fight action. When they make the move action they can move up to double their normal movement allowance, and may engage enemy units. If they engage an enemy unit, they may claim charge bonuses when they make the fight action.

If the move action is used to disengage from one or more enemy units, they may not re-engage any of those same units this turn.

This order may not be used if any model in the unit is pinned.

Charge bonuses: When a unit successfully charges into combat, for that turn each model gets +1 attack when they fight. In addition, they may re-roll any hit rolls of 1 when they fight.

Fall Back

This order allows a unit to make a move action. When they make the move action, they may move up to their normal move allowance, and may disengage from enemy units.

This order may only be used if at least one model in the unit is pinned.

First Fire

This order allows a unit to make a shoot action. They may claim the first fire bonus when they make the shoot action.

This order may not be used if any model in the unit is fire locked. If engaged with an enemy unit but not fire locked, this order may not be used to shoot at the engaged enemy unit(s).

First fire bonus: Models in this unit may re-roll hit rolls of 1 when they shoot.

Overwatch

This order allows a unit to make a shoot action. The shoot action may only be used to attack enemy units they are engaged with.

When they make the shoot action, they must subtract 2 from their to hit rolls, but the action can still be taken even if models in the unit are fire locked.

This order may not be used if the unit was already engaged at the start of the turn.

Pile-In

This order allows a unit to make two actions: move and fight. The move action can not be made after making the fight action. Only models that are not in base contact with enemy models may move.

This order may only be used by a unit that is engaged.

Models that move may engage other enemy units besides those that they may already be engaged with.

Classes, Pinning & Fire Locking

There are 6 "pinning classes" in the game, each made up of one or more "model classes":

  1. Infantry, cavalry, bikes, light artillery, light vehicles & monsters.
  2. Monstrous creatures, vehicles & walkers.
  3. Gargantuan creatures, super heavy vehicles & super heavy walkers.
  4. Monolithic creatures, praetorians & scout titans.
  5. Titanic creatures & battle titans.
  6. Emperor titans.

When models of two opposing units enter base to base contact, their units become engaged. It is only when two units are engaged that they may attack each other in close combat. Ordinarily, opposing units that are engaged may not be fired upon.

In addition, units may become pinned and/or fire locked when engaged. Ordinarily, a unit engaged with another unit that is of the same or higher pinning class becomes pinned. If a unit is engaged with an opposing unit that is of a smaller pinning class, then it is not pinned.

If a unit is pinned, it may not use advance, first fire or charge orders. If it wishes to retreat from the combat it must use fall back orders. If it wishes to attack back in combat it must use pile-in orders. And in some situations it may be able to shoot at the unit(s) it is engaged with by using overwatch orders.

A unit is fire locked (meaning it can not shoot any weapons) if it is engaged with any enemy units, unless all of the enemy units are two or more pinning classes smaller. If a unit is engaged but not fire locked then it can shoot its weapons out of the combat (but not into it), and may also have enemy units from outside of the combat shoot at it.

Attacking & Destroying Enemy Models

Firing Weapons

Each time a model is allowed to fire, it may fire with all the ranged weapons it is armed with. Some weapons have multiple profiles, such as the Nova Cannon, and only one such profile can be chosen each time the model fires this weapon.

When shooting at long range, which is shooting at an enemy unit that is further than 45cm away (on advance orders) or 60cm away (on first fire orders), the to hit roll of all units is 5+.

Making Close Combat Attacks

When a unit fights in combat, each model in base contact with a model in an enemy unit may direct its attacks against that unit. In addition, any other models in the attacking unit that are not in base contact may still attack, provided they are within 10cm of a visible model in an engaged enemy unit.

Hits & Saving Throws

Roll to hit, then roll to save. There is no roll to wound.

When rolling to hit, a hard roll of a 1 is always a miss, and a hard roll of a 6 is always a hit, no matter the modifiers involved.

Whenever a model is hit by an enemy attack, its saving throw is determined by the power of the attack and the resilience of the model that is hit. If both of these numbers are the same, the saving throw is 4+, but if one is higher than the other then the save gets better or worse depending on the difference.

If the resilience is far higher than the power, then the attack will really struggle to damage the target, even giving the target a re-roll as stated in brackets, and even giving the target an automatic save.
However, if the power is considerably greater than the resilience, then there is no way for the target to save at all.

Note that models that have been destroyed do not have to be removed from the tabletop unless they have already been used that turn. If that unit has not been used yet, then keep note of how many casualties have been sustained, and they will be removed after the unit is used.

Optional Rules

These following rules need to be discussed and evaluated a bit more.

The following rules can be used if players deem it too strange that units can still act even after being wiped out or taking horrendous casualties.

If, since the start of the turn, a unit has received at least 50% casualties (either models or wounds) before having the chance to act, when the unit does act, it suffers the following penalty:

In addition, players can take it further by adding the following penalties for if a unit gets completely destroyed:

Other Shooting Rules

Line Of Sight

Models can always trace line of sight through friendly models. Enemy units will block line of sight but only if they are of equal or higher pinning class than both the firing unit and the target unit.

If a firing unit or target unit has an elevated position, then a model's eye view will be required to see if the firing unit has line of sight.

Cover

If a unit is in soft cover, for example in a ruin or in a forest, then they become harder to hit, and anyone shooting at them must subtract 1 from their hit rolls. It is possible to shoot through soft cover at a unit on the other side, but this will incur a -2 penalty.

Hard cover, such as being in a building, also incurs a -1 to hit modifier, but also gives the models inside +1 to their resilience if they get hit. Hard cover such as a building can not be shot through.

If a model or unit is fairly obscured by solid cover, like the corner of a building or the brow of a hill, but can still be seen, then it too will gain a -1 to hit cover bonus.

Other Close Combat Rules

Close Combat & Buildings

Units can not move into buildings occupied by enemy forces. At least, not without a fight. In order to remove an enemy unit from a building via close combat, an attacking unit must move in and engage the building as if the building was an enemy unit. Only units that are actually allowed to move into the building are allowed to attack in this way.

The attacking unit can now roll their attacks as if they were attacking normally, but the enemy unit will be at -1 to hit. If a unit inside a building is wiped out at any point during a turn, then any enemy units that attacked them that turn in combat may move into the building, though they may not do this if they have subsequently been pinned by another enemy unit.

Neither attacking unit or defending unit are classed as pinned by each other during these engagements, and as such can both freely move away. The unit in the building may also still shoot, but if it shoots at the enemy unit engaging them then they must choose overwatch orders so will be at -2 to hit.

Special Rules

Model Special Rules

Character
This model can not be targeted by ranged attacks from further than 30cm away, unless they are the closest visible model to the model that is firing.
Collar Of Khorne
This model is not affected in any way by any psychic powers, no matter whether they are friendly or enemy, shooting attacks, buffs or nerfs.
Daemon
This rule does nothing specific for this model. Instead, it interacts with other special rules.
Deep Strike
Units waiting in reserve to deep strike may enter the battlefield in the deep strike phase. If both players have units deep striking on this turn, then the players roll off, with the winner choosing who will deep strike a unit first. Players then alternate deep striking units. When a unit deep strikes, it is placed anywhere on the battlefield that is not within 15cm of an enemy unit.
Deflector Shield
If this model gets shot at by an attack from further than 30cm away, reduce the AP of the attack by 1, to a minimum of 1. If this model gets shot at by an attack from further than 60cm away, reduce the AP of the attack by 2, to a minimum of 1.
Flyer
This model can move over enemy models and terrain whenever it moves, though it may not end its turn on top of impassable terrain or enemy models.
Unless a flyer has landed, it is at -1 to hit with ranged weapons.
Flyers can never be charged, engaged, or attacked in close combat in any way unless they have landed. Flyers may never engage enemy units or attack in close combat. They are never classed as pinned, but can be fire locked if engaged while landed. Most flyers can not land, and those that can will have a note in their special rules. Flyers that are transports must land in order for troops to disembark or embark. Flyers may either take off or land on each turn, they may not do both. To take off or land requires 30cm of movement allowance.
Furious Charge
Models in this unit may add +1 AP to their close combat attacks on a turn that the unit charges.
Grand Strategist
A model with this special rule allows a player to add +1 on to the roll for initiative, provided that the model is on the tabletop at the start of the turn. It may be used cumulatively with the usual turn 1 bonus, or to cancel it out if the opponent has the bonus. A player does not have to announce this rule before making the dice roll. A player (or team of players) may only use this rule once per game, no matter how many models in the army have this rule.
Healer
Any friendly infantry units within 5cm of any models with this special rule gain +1 to their resilience. This is not cumulative.
Holofield
This model is protected by a special shield which distorts its image and makes it hard for enemy units to target. When hit by ranged attacks, this model gets a bonus 5+ fixed save against each hit. If any saves are failed then these hits will strike the model as normal, and a regular saving throw is then taken. A holofield provides no protection against close combat attacks.
Infiltrate
The unit may make a double-speed move before the first turn begins. If both players have infiltrators, then they roll off with the winner deciding who will move one of their infiltrating units first. Players then alternate moving such units until all have been moved. An infiltrating unit may not move within 30cm of an enemy unit.
Jump
This model can move over enemy models and terrain whenever it moves, though it may not end its turn on top of impassable terrain or enemy models.
Mechanic
Any friendly light vehicles, vehicles or walkers within 5cm of any models with this special rule gain +1 to their resilience. This is not cumulative.
Mesmerising Aura
Enemy models of equal pinning class or lower must subtract 1 from their hit rolls in close combat when attacking a model with this special rule.
Motivational
Any friendly infantry, cavalry or biker models within 5cm of this model may add 1 to the AP of their hits when they attack in close combat. This is not cumulative.
Sensorium Dome
Any psychic shooting attacks that hit this model (but not it's shields, if it has any) reduce their AP by 1.
Shields
This model is protected by a number of energy shields that can absorb enemy fire. Shields each have a resilience of 3 and saving throws must be taken as normal. Once a shield is down it does not come back up for the remainder of the battle. Shields provide no protection against close combat attacks.
Skimmer
This model can move over enemy models and terrain whenever it moves, though it may not end its turn on top of impassable terrain or enemy models. In addition, this model is never classed as being pinned in combat for the purposes of movement, and may freely move away. If it disengages from an enemy unit by using charge orders, it may not charge back into combat with any of the units it was engaged with.
Stealth
Models firing at this model must subtract 1 from their to hit rolls if they are further than 30cm away.
Transport
If a transport unit moves, then any models inside may only disembark within coherency of the model that transported them. If the transport did not move, then the unit inside can disembark as far as they would normally be able to move.
In order for a unit to embark, all models in that unit must be within coherency of their transport in order for them to embark and the transports still be able to move. If the unit is further away than coherency, then the unit may move to the transports and embark, but the transports may then not move that turn.
When a transport is destroyed, roll a D6 for every infantry stand within, and on a roll of a 1 that stand is destroyed also.

Weapon Special Rules

Blast
If a blast weapon hits its target, instead of hitting it once, it hits it multiple times as stated in the profile.
Flak
Flak weapons do not suffer the -1 to hit modifier for shooting at flyers.
Ignores Shields
Attacks from this weapon ignore Shields and Deflector Shield special rules, and hit the target as normal. The weapon does not ignore Holofields.
Indirect
This weapon can be fired at a target that is out of line of sight, as long as an allied model can see the target instead. These attacks are made with a -2 modifier.
Mandiblasters
This weapon has the rending special rule, but only when attacking infantry.
Overload
If an attack from this weapon hits any shields, it causes D3 hits against the shields instead.
Rending (Test)
If a weapon with rending scores a hit on a 6, add +1 to the AP of the weapon for that hit.
Shakes Enemy
If a unit suffers a wound to an attack with this special rule then it becomes shaken. While it is shaken, all models in the unit may only move half of what they would normally be allowed. The unit is no longer shaken at the end of its next activation, even if it does not move.
Vibro
When a unit containing models with vibro weapons attacks, each such attack made against the same target enemy unit has its attack power boosted by the number of hits made by such weapons. So for example, if a unit fires vibro weapons against the same enemy unit and scores 3 hits, all 3 of those hits would have their power boosted by 3.

Mandatory Army Special Rules

Tyranids - Instinctive
Instinctive units may not re-roll 1s when they first fire unless they are in synapse range when they are activated. If they are in synapse range they may add +1 to hit if they first fire at the closest visible enemy unit.
Instinctive units do not get +1 attack in close combat when they charge unless they are in synapse range when they are activated. If they are in synapse range they may add +1 to hit if they charge the closest visible enemy unit.
Instinctive units may not use overwatch or fall back orders unless they are in synapse range when they are activated.
Tyranids - Synapse
Synapse creatures have a synapse range of 30cm. Instinctive creatures will get bonuses to their combat if they are within synapse range, but will be much weaker if they are not in synapse range.
In addition, if an enemy psyker tries to use a psychic power in the psychic phase while in synapse range, the Tyranid player rolls a D6 and on a 5+ the power is cancelled. This does not work against enemy Tyranid forces.

Optional Army Special Rules

These rules are not used by default as these bonuses are not included in the points values of the units, and are probably not balanced. These rules are only used if the players agree.

Androids - Extra Armour Plating
Android Trooper Phalanx units may re-roll saving throws of 1.
Chaos - Daemonic Gifts
Each time a Chaos Space Marine unit fights in close combat, roll a D6. On a 4+, the AP of their combat attacks is increased by 1 for this turn.
Eldar - Art Of War
Eldar Guardian units can re-roll 1s to hit whenever they shoot, not just when they first fire.
Imperial Guard - First Rank Fire Second Rank Fire
Imperial Guardsmen units may add +1 to hit if they first fire at the closest visible enemy unit.
Orks - Keep Fightin' Ladz!
Ork Boyz units can re-roll 1s to hit in combat whenever they fight, not just when they charge.
Space Marines - Codex Discipline
Space Marine Tactical Squads may fire after using fall back orders, but when they do the hit roll is changed to 5+.
Space Wolves - Counter Attack
Space Wolf Grey Hunter Squads may re-roll all of their misses in close combat if they themselves got charged this turn.
Squats - Hold The Line
Squat Warrior units may +1 to the AP of their ranged weapons if they are holding an objective.
Tyranids - Razor Sharp Claws
Termagant units get rending on their combat attacks if they were in synapse range when activated.

Psychic Powers

A unit may only be affected by each particular psychic power once per turn. For example, you could not use The Horror twice on the same enemy unit to lower their hit rolls by 2.

Unless stated otherwise, all psychic powers have a range of 30cm.

Chaos

Diabolic Strength (Any Chaos Psyker)
Select a visible friendly Chaos unit of equal or lower pinning class to the psyker. Models in the unit add 1 to their AP when they attack in close combat this turn.
Miasma Of Pestilence (Nurgle Psykers Only)
Select a visible enemy unit within 15cm and of equal or lower pinning class to the psyker. That unit reduces its resilience by 1 this turn, to a minimum of 1. (This has no effect on shields).
Symphony Of Pain (Slaanesh Psykers Only)
Select a visible enemy unit of equal or lower pinning class to the psyker. That unit must subtract 1 from their hit rolls in close combat this turn.
Gaze Of Fate (Tzeentch Psykers Only)
Select a visible friendly Tzeentch unit of equal or lower pinning class to the psyker. That unit may re-roll any failed saves it makes this turn.

Eldar

Conceal
Select a visible friendly Eldar unit of equal or lower pinning class to the psyker. If that unit gets shot at from further than 30cm away later this turn, the enemy models must subtract 1 from their to hit rolls.
Guide
Select a visible friendly Eldar unit of equal or lower pinning class to the psyker. Models in the unit may re-roll missed hits when they shoot any ranged weapons this turn. The psyker may not use this power on themselves.

Imperial

Hammer Of The Emperor (Any Imperial Psyker)
Select a visible friendly Imperial unit of equal or lower pinning class to the psyker. Models in the unit add 1 to their AP when they attack in close combat this turn.
Terrify (Inquisition Psykers Only)
Select a visible enemy unit of equal or lower pinning class to the psyker. That unit can not use Overwatch orders this turn.
Null Zone (Space Marine Psykers Only)
Select a visible enemy unit within 15cm and of equal or lower pinning class to the psyker. That unit reduces its resilience by 1 this turn, to a minimum of 1. (This has no effect on shields).
Storm Caller (Space Wolf Psykers Only)
Select a visible friendly Space Wolf unit of equal or lower pinning class to the psyker. If that unit gets shot at from further than 30cm away later this turn, the enemy models must subtract 1 from their to hit rolls.

Orks

Da Jump
Select a visible friendly Ork infantry unit. Remove that unit from the battlefield. The unit must return to the battlefield at the end of that turn using the deep strike rules.
Warpath
Select a visible friendly Ork infantry, cavalry, biker, monster, monstrous creature or walker unit within 15cm. If that unit attacks in close combat later this turn each model in the unit increases their attacks by 1.

Squats

Guiding Spirits
Select a visible friendly Squat unit of equal or lower pinning class to the psyker. Models in the unit may re-roll missed hits when they shoot any ranged weapons this turn. The psyker may not use this power on themselves.
Protection Of The Ancestors
Select a visible friendly Squat unit of equal or lower pinning class to the psyker. That unit gains +1 resilience against shooting attacks this turn.

Tyranids

The Horror
Select a visible enemy unit of equal or lower pinning class to the psyker. That unit must subtract 1 from their hit rolls in close combat this turn.
Onslaught
Select a friendly visible Tyranid unit of equal or lower pinning class to the psyker. If that unit attacks in close combat later this turn, any 6s rolled become 2 hits instead of 1.

Objectives

An objective is brought under the control of an army if at least one model from that army is within 5cm of the objective counter, while no model from the enemy army is within 5cm.

The objective will remain under the control of that army provided no enemy model moves to within 5cm of it, so the model or models that claimed the objective do not have to remain within 5cm.

Whenever it is required to count up victory points, each objective counter is worth 500pts to the player that controls it.

Game End & Victory Conditions

Unless players agree otherwise, a game will end after 5 turns. At this time, victory points should be totalled to see who has won the battle and by how much.

Of course, there are other ways to win, such as if a player surrenders, which automatically means the other player wins.

The players can also agree to play to a victory point target. To do this, victory points will need to be totalled at the end of every turn, and if either player has reached the target then the game is over. This means games can be over very quickly, or go on for much longer, depending on how the battle goes.

Each time they are asked total up victory points, players should add up how many points they have acquired from breaking and wiping out enemy units. If objectives are being used, the points for any under their control should also be added.

Players can set whatever points total they wish. But the following guidelines can be used as a good place to start:

So, in a 6000pt game with 6 objectives, for example, the victory point target would be 5500pts. This target is made of 4000pts for killing the enemy, plus 1500pts for claiming 3 objectives.
